Digital 3-axis Magnetometer Heading Sensor

  • Small, lightweight, cost-effective source of magnetic heading reference
  • Provides accurate 3-axis sensing of the Earth’s magnetic field for use by Air Data, Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) to determine aircraft heading
  • Integrates with G3X™, G3X Touch™ and G5 series electronic flight displays
  • Usable for both experimental and certificated aircraft installations with the G5 electronic instrument serving as DG/HSI and/or attitude indicator
  • Installs easily; mountable in 4 cardinal compass directions
GMU 11 is an affordable, microprocessor-based magnetometer. It can be used to accurately sense the Earth’s magnetic field alignment and provide this data to compatible ADAHRS processors for use in referencing aircraft magnetic heading. In essence, the magnetometer acts as an electronic compass, showing the ADAHRS which direction the aircraft is facing in relation to magnetic north.

Unlike conventional flux valve systems, which detect only the horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic field, the GMU 11 magnetometer provides full 3-axis vector measurements for the most precise digital indication of magnetic field strength and direction.

Вопросы и ответы
Does the GARMIN G3X GMU 11 MAGNETOMETER come with a connector kit, or must the connector kit in accessories be purchased in addition to the Magnetometer?

It is not included. Please see part # 11-15066.

What is the correct connector kit part number, to connect this to a Garmin G5?

The connector kit for the GMU 11 is part # 11-15066. To pair the G5 with the GMU 11, you'll need to run a 2 conductor shielded twisted pair on pins 1 and 2 of each connector. The shielding must be terminated to a ring terminal on the housing of the connector to function as a proper shield ground.

I have the experimental Garmin G5 and would like to add a GMU 11 magnetometer. What is included in the GMU 11 connector kit?

The GMU 11 connector kit (Garmin pn: 011-03002-00) includes the following: cast connector backshell with hardware can bus terminator 9 pin d-sub connector 9 size 20 d-sub socket contacts

I have a G5 Experimental version. The product selection is either G3X (Experimental) or G5 (Certified). Which one do I need for a G5 (Experimental)?

The GMU 11 experimental version, part number 11-15077, is the item that you will need.

Where is the GMU11 device supposed to be installed in the wing?

In the g3x manual under the gmu 11 section, there are detailed recommendations as to where and how you can install this unit.

I have GDU 370 AND GSU 25, are they compatible with the GMU11?

Those units are part of the G3X system, so yes they will work together.

I have yet a GNS 430 WAAS in my aircraft. Must I order a GMU11 for my Garmin G5? Must I order #11-15066 cable to connect my GPS with the G5? Thanks

No you do not have to have the G5 connected to the GMU 11, however you must have the G5 connected to a certified GPS antenna. You can connect your GNS 430w to your G5(AI) via RS232.

Will the battery backup on the g5 keep the GMU 11 functioning when power fails? Co-pilot independent system. Thanks Ray

No the G5 will not keep the GMU11 alive. You will need a backup power source.

If I mount 2 G5's, can I use only one GMU 11 for both?

Yes only one GMU 11 is required for the setup of two G5's.

What is the weight of the GMU-11 magnetometer? For weight and balance.

Approx 0.16 lbs

What are the dimensions of the GMU 11 and is it required to be attached level to work properly?

The dims of the GMU 11 are: 2.74in X 0.93in X 3.78in. Yes, it is recommended to mounted on a level surface.

My plane has the Garmin 430 waas and I am planning on installing two G5 units. One for attitude, 2ns for the HSI and glideslope function. Do I need the GMU 11 for all to function properly?

Yes, you will need the GMU 11 for your set up.

I presently have a G5 as an AI linked to a 430W. Im buying a second G5 for HSI/autopilot functionality. Will I need a GMU11 in this sceanrio?

You will need the GMU 11, and depending on your autopilot, the GAD 29B.

Does the GMU 11 connect directly to the G5 or is there a separate data bus required to interface between the two?

The GMU 11 connects directly to the G5 via the CAN-BUS.

Will GMU 11 Certified 11-15418 G5 Experimental work? How does the Certified version differ from Experimental?

We recommend using the Experimental GMU 11 part # 11-15077. The difference between the Certified and Experimental version is the Certified version has an STC and Experimental does not.

I have the KX 165, I would like to know if it is compatible with the Garmin G5?

The KX 165 is not listed as a supported unit per the installation manual.

Does each G5 need a magnetometer?

You only require one GMU11 for the installation.

Do I need gmu 11 in order to use with Garmin 255 nav com for navigation /ILS on the HSI as a stand alone system?

Yes, the magnetometer is required by the G5 for full functionality with a NAV.
