CUBS ON THE LOOSE
Owners and pilots of Piper J-3 Cubs know the joy of leisurely flying at ground-viewing altitudes in restored vintage aircraft. Author Lyle Wheeler and other "humanoids" decided to take their Cubs on barnstorming trips, in which they would fly without modern navigational aids, land on grass runways, and sleep, whenever possible, under the wings. The Cubs' adventures are told by NC-87881, Wheeler's flying companion. The flights take them to the Thomasville, Georgia, Fly-in; on long excursions with no particular destination in mind; a sentimental journey to the Cubs' birthplace, Lock Haven, Pennyslvania, and on a grand tour down the Mississippi River from its headwaters.
Along the way, the Cubs learn that fuel advertised is not always fuel available, that weather conditions can be a challenge when flying without modern instruments, that their humanoids are quick to accept the comfort of a bed rather than sleep on the ground. They meet wonderful friends-humanoids and aircraft relations - on their travels, and see the world from a special perspective.
