Owners of Lycoming and Continental powered airplanes now have an electronic, analog alternative to the old cable driven tachometer. The new UMA tach is certified to FAA TSO C49b standards for fixed wing aircraft. The system uses a tach sender mounted on the engine in place of the mechanical cable and is connected to the indicator with a single, 3-conductor cable.

The 3 1/8” indicator utilizes a high torque pivot and jewel movement. The hour meter can be factory set to start at any desired RPM point. This unit gives the pilot the analog display that is easiest to scan and provides electronic accuracy and ease of installation. Custom dial markings in color and internal Electro-Luminescent lighting are available at extra cost.

Can I install this tach in my certified aircraft with a simple logbook entry or does it need a field approval?

This product is certified (TSO'd) but you will still need to send in a 337 field approval referencing the TSO. If you have the exact same model number in the panel and you are replacing it a simple lookbook entry will work. Always consult your installer as each FAA FSDO may rule differently.

What does 6 in the sending unit name mean(UMA TACH PICK UP FOR BENDIX MAG 6 LEAD)? Is this sending unit included into the UMA 3-1/8 ELECTRIC TACH 0-3500 RPM W/ SENDER 6 TSO(10-01221)? What is difference between 10-01221 and 10-01222?

6 in the name UMA TACH PICK UP FOR BENDIX MAG 6 LEAD means 6 ft lead. It refers to the length of the lead. Yes, the sender is included with 10-01221. Difference between 10-01221 and 10-01222 is that 10-01221 does not include range markings and 10-01222 does include range markings. The range markings for 10-01222 are GREEN ARC 500-2700, RED LINE 2700 RPM.

Are there any 2-1/4 Electric Tachometers avalible?

While there are a few such as PN: 10-02140, please not that they are for experimental aircraft and are not TSO'd.

I'd like to know if PN: 10-01222 UMA Electronic 3-1/8 Tachometer will interface directly with a Lightspeed Plasma III unit?

This would be UMA PN:T19-801-112 and Per UMA, this Tachometer would work with the Plasma III.

Is the hours counter resettable to the current aircraft hours as in mechanical tachometers. Is the replacement of a mechanical tach in a certified aircraft considered a minor alteration by the FAA?

Yes, indicate current hours on the order to have hobbs meter set to engine time. This will only be a minor alteration if the tach you are installing the same model of the one you are replacing.

Does this UMA tachometer (part number 10-00120) come with the sending unit?

Yes, this product includes the sender that screws into the tach drive.

Do I need special approval to install this UMA TSO'd tachometer into my Canadian registered certified aircraft?

This unit has a FAA TSO approval. However, you will need to contact your local aviation authority office to see what their ruling on installing a FAA TSO'd unit into your aircraft.
