If I use one strobe, do I need a box for it? If I don't, where do the three wires on the strobe connect?

Per the supplier: Yes, you need the strobe driver box to drive the strobe part of the head, the LED part is just 12 volts.

Is it true, that the LED portion of this assembly is not a strobe but simply a position light? I am looking for an assembly like yours with an LED strobe that works on 12 volts.

Yes, only the position light has a LED bulb. The LED strobes we offer are part of the wingtip light assembly. Please see part number 11-11365 for more information.
