Is this probe the same as a S1630-1 for a Cessna 172?

The manufacturer does not have any cross reference data for the S1630-1.

Is there a wire specification for use with this sender?

Per the manufacturer: On all oil and water temperature gauges, 14-gauge wire is required for gauge ground; it must be a dedicated ground to insure gauge accuracy and to eliminate any erratic gauge readings.
